How to push in Finnish
How to push in Finnish
I was completing this Memrise course about my easy Finnish novel, and I realized how many different verbs Finnish has for pushing. Do you know the difference between these ones?
- painaa
- ponnistaa
- puskea
- tynt
- tni
- tnist
Here are some example sentences...
- Paina tst.
- l ponnista viel! Ponnista nyt!
- Puske sit palloa!
- Tynn sit ovea.
- l tni!
- Tuo poika tnisi minua.
...and the translations are after this ad:

- Paina tst. - Push/press here.
- l ponnista viel! Ponnista nyt! - Dont push yet! Push now! (At childbirth.)
- Puske sit palloa! - Push that ball (with your forehead)!
- Tynn sit ovea. - Push that door.
- l tni! - Dont push me! (tni = to push another person multiple times)
- Tuo poika tnisi minua. - That boy pushed me. (tnist = to push once. It can be an accident or intentional teasing/bullying.)
